CHAPTER NINE

Dusseldorf

The flat green land began to be studded with small industrial towns and crossed with railway lines. Soon another rise brought them in sight of the broad brown flood of the Rhine, shining in the pale watery sunlight.

After the long bridge, the road curved right through a park with tree-lined alleys and an ornamental lake, and down a wide street flanked by new office blocks. It all had a relaxed air of pleasantness and well-being.

“Here we are,” said Charlie, pointing to the tall IG Farben sign on the other side of the street. “There’s a bloke there, name of Schrader, in the export department. Let’s just cruise past and spy out the land, then we’ll come back and put ourselves in the Firm’s carpark. After that it’s up to the local lads.”

“Why not turn in now?” said Jeff, glancing up at the blue P sign.

“Just a feeling in me bones, me old love,” she said.

They drew up at the lights, waiting to turn at the end of the block. Suddenly a street-siren whooped up the scale and held onto the screaming top-note, while all the traffic-lights switched to red.

A black Mercedes staff-car followed by four Schutzenpanzer swung round the corner on the wrong side; they wove their way to the front of the IG Farben building and jolted to a halt. Six helmeted troopers leapt from the back of each of the transporters and spread out in a cordon along the front of the building. From the other side of the building more troopers filed up at the double and pushed in through the main entrance. The machine-guns fore and aft on the Schutzenpanzer tracked to cover the street. An SS orderly opened the door of the Mercedes and a tall lean Waffen-SS officer in field-grey uniform emerged unhurriedly, looked up and down the street, glanced up at the facade of the building and went inside.

With a mouth as dry as paper, Jeff whispered: “Charlie, they’re onto us.”

Charlie still had her head turned, looking out through the window with alert curiosity.

“Don’t think so, love. This is a full scale Waffen-SS job. If it was just us, they’d mostly be SD or Gestapo and they’d do it nice and quietly, just a few unmarked cars and men in business suits. This is big and official. I bet it has something to do with the Goebbels business.”

The siren wound down to silence and the traffic-lights flipped back to their normal cycle. Charlie drove slowly ahead on the green.

“We’re still almost as badly off,” said Jeff gloomily. “If they’ve got our contact, we’re still stuck with that thing in the back and nowhere to take it.”

“How do we know that they’ve got our man?” said Charlie. “They may be looking for someone quite different. I doubt if it’s a mass arrest or dragnet, just a heavy one, that’s all. I’ll try a phone call, it might tell us something.”

They drove straight down and turned at the railway station where there was a row of phone-booths.
